Transcript

Settle into a comfortable position... eyes closing...

And without doing anything else, simply listen.

There are sounds around you right now. Maybe obvious ones, maybe faint ones — the hum of a room, distant movement, the sound of your own body. Let your hearing open wide, like a soft radar, receiving everything.

Now — here is the experiment. Instead of listening to the sounds, listen for what's between them. Underneath them. The background.

Silence.

Every sound arises out of silence, plays for a moment, and returns to silence. Sounds are like figures carved in the air — but silence is the block of wood. It is what everything is made from, and what everything dissolves back into.

Music makes this obvious. Listen to a melody, and you'll notice: the notes come and go, but the silences between the notes — those are what make it music. Without the silence, there is only noise.

Even speech. The words flow, but the pauses — the spaces between them — those are where the meaning lives. Silence is not the absence of communication.

Silence is the mother of all sound.

Now let your attention turn inward. Your own mind — it, too, makes sounds. Thoughts arise, chatter, pass. Watch them the way you just watched the sounds of the room: arising out of silence, returning to silence.

And between your thoughts — in the gap after one ends, before the next begins — there is that same silence. The same vast, warm, listening presence.

You don't have to create this gap. You only have to notice it. It has been happening all along.

The sages of the East pointed to this constantly: the potter shapes a vessel, but it is the emptiness inside that makes it useful. The room is livable because of its open space. The door works because of its opening.

Silence — the apparent nothing — turns out to be the most essential thing.

Rest here now, not as someone straining to be silent, but as silence itself — briefly shaped into a person, listening.

Sounds will keep coming. Thoughts will keep coming. Let them. They are the melody. You are the quiet underneath, which was never disturbed and never could be.

Slowly now... let your awareness widen back to the room... the ordinary sounds returning like old friends...

One soft breath in...

And out...

Eyes opening gently.
