Get comfortable... let your eyes close... and take a slow, easy breath...
Now — notice your face. The face is where we keep our seriousness. The furrowed brow. The tight mouth. The held jaw. The face of someone working on something important.
And here you are — sitting quietly, doing nothing — and for many of us, the face is still working. Still serious. Even meditation we approach like a chore. Another task. Getting mindful, the way one gets a promotion.
So right now, do something slightly scandalic: soften your face... and let the corners of your mouth turn up, just a little. You don't have to smile for anyone. No one is watching. Just let the mouth remember what a smile feels like, from the inside.
There. That's the spirit we want.
Because here is a secret the universe has been keeping in plain sight: it doesn't work. It plays. Light plays. Water plays. Stars play, fusing and exploding with extraordinary extravagance, and no one is making a profit from it.
Even our language remembers this, if we listen. Musicians play music. Actors perform a play. Children are told to go out and play — and no one considers this a waste of their time.
The flowers of the field — they do not labor. They do not spin. They do not worry about next season. And yet they are more radiant than anything a striving mind could manufacture.
Now watch your breath, but lightly. Playfully. Watch it the way a kitten watches a dangling string — total attention, total ease. Attention without gravity.
If you catch yourself being serious about meditation — "am I doing this right?" — notice that even that can be smiled at. The mind that grades your stillness is like a chaperone at a dance. Thank it kindly, and keep dancing.
Let the breath be playful now. Sometimes deep, sometimes shallow. Sometimes long, sometimes short. No rules. The body knows how to breathe for the simple joy of it, the way a dog runs for the joy of running.
Life will try to convince you, later today, that it is a serious business. Deadlines. Duties. Grim faces. And some of it matters, in its way. But underneath all of it, the game continues — the light is still playing, the planet still spinning in its ancient, effortless waltz, and you are still made of the same stuff that finds the whole thing delightful.
Keep that small smile with you as you go back out there. It's the badge of someone who knows it's a game — and plays anyway, wholeheartedly.
Breathe in, lightly...
Breathe out, with a smile...
Let your eyes open.
Well done — you stayed.
You can carry on with The Flow of Water — Wu Wei whenever you're ready. There is no hurry.
