Transcript

Let yourself settle... eyes closing gently... weight sinking down...

Breathe in slowly...

And out...

Imagine a wave, rising in the middle of a vast ocean. This wave has a life of its own — a height, a shape, a brief and shining existence. It rises... it crests... and eventually, it must fall. Every wave does.

Now imagine that this wave becomes afraid. "When I fall," it thinks, "I will be destroyed. This is the end of me." And it looks anxiously at the waves around it, rising and falling, and grieves for them and for itself.

But here's what the wave doesn't understand: it was never a separate thing that died when it fell. The wave was always the ocean, waving. Its rising was the ocean rising. Its falling is the ocean falling.

Nothing is lost. Nothing was ever anything other than ocean.

Now feel your own breath, moving like a tide within you.

Rising...

And falling...

Rising...

And falling...

Each breath a small wave — appearing, cresting, dissolving. And when it dissolves... is anything missing? Is anything gone?

No. The ocean simply settles, gathering itself for the next rising.

Now bring this feeling to your body. Waves of sensation — warmth, tingling, tension — rising and falling across the ocean of your awareness.

You are not the waves. You are the deep water beneath them. The deep water is untouched by the weather on the surface. It has no fear of storms. It has no longing for calm. It simply is — vast, quiet, whole.

Whatever in your life is cresting right now — an emotion, a fear, a change, an ending — let it crest. Waves do not need to be fixed. They need to be allowed. Watch each one rise with your full, gentle attention...

And watch each one fall back, on its own, into the stillness it came from.

The wave's fear was a misunderstanding. The wave's freedom was simply this: to realize I am not this small shape — I am the entire ocean, briefly expressing itself as a wave.

So are you.

Ride gently now, in this deep, still water, for a few more unhurried breaths.

And when you're ready, let the surface of your awareness ripple back toward the room.

Take one wave of breath in...

And let it fall away...

Open your eyes, remembering what you are.
